Along the meandering Ruiten Aa and ancient forests
Wander along the meandering Ruiten Aa, the stream that meanders gracefully through the landscape. Like a viper, the water carries between fields and along ancient ash roads. Nearby are the ancient woods Metbroek and Lieftinghsbroek, special remnants of the original primeval forest, protected by Natuurmonumenten since 1927. Walk here among beautiful oaks, colourful flowers and who knows, you might spot a roe deer among the trees.
Westerwolde at its most beautiful
The variety in the landscape makes every stap special: open fields, tufts of forest, old dirt roads and fields all around you. Walking through this area feels like taking a trip back in time. Here, the Ruiten Aa meanders gracefully through the landscape but then briefly dips under the road. Walking along the Doene Esweg, past trees and fields, it is as if you have stepped into another time. At the charming village of Ellersinghuizen, you meet the Ruiten Aa again.
