Groningen as gateway to festivals

The number of big names in the music industry that once performed at Eurosonic as a starting act is so large, you could easily fill 4 festival weekends with them. Take Bastille, for instance. Right after the band flattened Vera in January 2013, they broke through worldwide with their mega hit Pompeii. A year later, George Ezra and Sam Smith hit the Groningen stage. The latter proved that Groningen could just be the way to the soundtrack of a James Bond film. Could be less. In 2016, it was the turn of the hitherto unknown Dua Lipa; she proved to be the big revelation of that year. The singer indicated years later that the festival had been important for her career; it was the first time she performed with her band. So you never heard her like at Eurosonic before. Many more recent breakthrough artists have also made their mark in Groningen. Take for instance Sam Fender, Sigrid and song festival sensation Daði Freyr. We could go on and on. New artists are the first to be heard at Eurosonic.
