Museum Landgoed Verhildersum
The cycle tour starts at Museum Borg Verhildersum, where you are immediately immersed in a piece of Groningen history. Be surprised and taken on a walk through the past, with stories about the ancient landed gentry, the new borg residents, the rich farmers and the poor farm labourers. A perfect start to your cycling day with fresh energy. The smell of the countryside, the gentle murmur of the wind and the pedalling give you a special sense of freedom.
Cycling makes you experience the province differently: the vastness of the landscape, the colours of nature and the charm of the villages really come into their own. On the way, make a stop at DoeZOO, an interactive animal world that invites you to take a break. This surprising zoo is all about insects. You will find numerous insect species and also all kinds of animals that eat these insects. It is not only a moment to catch your breath, but also to reflect on what you see around you. After a short break, cycle on and reach Landhuis Oosterhouw, a place that feels like a tranquil postcard.
A tea lover's paradise
The village of Ulrum lies on two mounds. On one of these mounds stood the 15th-century Asingaborg until 1809. On the other mound stands the church of Ulrum. Exactly how old this hall church is is unknown, but it was probably built around 1225. It is a place where history is almost tangible and where you can lose yourself for a moment in stories of the past. Stap on your steel steed towards De Theefabriek in Houwerzijl: a paradise for the tea lover! De Theefabriek is located in the former church and pastorie of the picturesque village of Houwerzijl, bought in 1989 for the symbolic sum of 1 guilder (45 euro cents). With a steaming cup of tea in your hand, enjoy the moment.
After a good thirst-quencher, continue your tour via Electra. The route leads you to the cosy marina and campsite De Waterwolf. This is a waterfront spot that invites you to explore even more of the area. It might be an idea to rent a boat here and explore the Reitdiep from the water. The landscape looks completely different from the water, almost like you're sailing in a painting. To conclude, you will reach gemaal De Waterwolf, an impressive feat of engineering and history.
