If I had to choose just one restaurant, it would be this one. Small dishes to share, good wine and, quite simply, always a cosy atmosphere. I always order the aubergine and the steak tartare here.

A tourist tip, but a well-deserved one. I actually take everyone who doesn’t know Groningen here. The view from the roof never gets boring.

This is the sort of place where you sit down at seven o’clock and suddenly realise it’s half past eleven. The food is fantastic and everyone I’ve ever taken here wants to come back.

The place where, in summer, Groningen transforms into one big terrace. With a blanket, a book and/or a bottle of wine, you could easily spend a whole afternoon here.

My favourite place to go out. Disco at the start of the evening, then more house music later on. Always a great mix of people and just a bit less pretentious than the average club.

If you want to experience Groningen through its festivals, this is the place to be. An old industrial atmosphere, plenty of electronic music and a crowd that seems to come from all over the place.

The most beautiful part of Groningen. When people ask me why I live here, I usually show them a photo of the Hoge der A , and then they understand.

Gasthuizen Grote Leliestraat
If you think Groningen is all about students, outdoor cafés and bicycles, do take a stroll down Grote Leliestraat. Behind the gates lie centuries-old courtyards. My favourite is the Middengasthuis; in spring, in particular, it feels as though you’ve accidentally stumbled upon a hidden garden.
