The wetland landscape is formed by an arched ridge of boulder clay and top sand on which eight ribbon villages are located. The Duurswold drainage canal was dug between 1869 and 1871 for the drainage of Duurswold and has a length of 19.1 km and a width of 13 to 20 metres. Its depth is 2.85 to 4.10 metres.
