Harvest route Westerkwartier

Renet Ekenstein

The garden of the Iwema Steenhuis features many old, Groningen apple and pear varieties. An example is the old apple variety 'Renet Ekenstein'. This variety was discovered in 1830 by the jonkheer van Ekenstein from Appingedam. The stone house itself is still inhabited, but walkers can check out the mill and bakery museum 't Steenhuus in the barn behind the house.

Peaches and figs

The Coendersborg s garden contains fruit trees and leifruit. Remarkably, there are also peaches and figs here. These species survive thanks to the wall heated with sunlight. There is not only a harvest for people, but also plenty of food for various animal species in the park forest near the borg.
