The Menkemaborg is one of the beautiful borgen in the province of Groningen that has been preserved. The borg was built in the fourteenth century and is originally a defensible "stone house" that has been enlarged and embellished over the centuries to the early eighteenth-century baroque house that it still is today.
From 1682 to 1902 the house was inhabited by members of the Alberda family. The Menkemaborg opened as a museum in 1927. The Menkemaborg is surrounded by canals. There are special gardens in between.
To the west of the borg lies the formal Dutch garden that was reconstructed to the situation of around 1705, which still contains various eighteenth-century species of flowers and plants. The sundial garden is at the end of this garden. Behind the borg is a sleek garden layout of paths and lawns.

On the east side of the borg are utility gardens with a fruit court with various old fruit varieties and a pear beau. Behind the treasure house, the former farm next to the borg, is the formal kitchen garden with compartments for vegetables and herbs.
In addition, there is a rose tunnel that blooms beautifully in July and there is a large maze where everyone can roam. Along the canal the stinzen plants bloom in the spring. There are some grasslands around the outer ring that are owned by the Natuurmonumenten Association.
