City marking S03/ A Walk along the Border
City marking S03/ A Walk along the BorderGroningen
In 1990 the city of Groningen celebrated its 950 th anniversary and a contemporary city gate was placed at each main entrance road of the city to mark this. Architect Daniel Libeskind developed these city gates. City marking S03 at the Rozenburglaan is a forest of crooked posts with a wedge at about eight metres high. The work of art represents an open book with paintings of historic fragments the artist used to express that the city’s history is written by its residents. The paintings on the work were created by Groningen artists.

Low Profile
Low ProfileGroningen
This land sculpture was designed by architect and artist Gunnar Daan. He was inspired by Emeritus Professor in biological psychiatry Rudy van den Hoofdakker, who is better known as poet Rutger Kopland. In 1966 Van den Hoofdakker published a thesis about sleep disorders, and Daan distilled the theme of sleep from this for his work or art featuring a sleeping woman, man, dog and cat. The figures are embedded in the slope and surrounded by a stainless steel rim. The steel functions as some kind of low profile (hence its title Low Profile ) filled with earth.

Step
StepGroningen
‘Stap’ (Step) is the larger than life-sized and extremely stylised body of a young girl who is hardly awakened and anonymous because of her missing head, arms and hands. She is standing straight and proud. Academy teacher Peter Stut created the bluestone pedestal that is reminiscent of a catwalk. The posture and stylised representation are characteristic of the sculptures by Siepman van den Berg, who is predominantly interested in the patterns of the human body and the abstraction that results when individual features are omitted.

Bro Bro Brille
Bro Bro BrilleGroningen
When Vroom & Dreesman (V&D) opened its doors in 1958, the management of the department store presented this statue to the city of Groningen. Bro Bro Brille was created by Gunnar Westman, based on a Danish children’s song. ‘Bro Bro Brille’ means Bridge Bridge Brille, a children’s game. Westman’s sculpture has a closed shape and was made from a cylinder-shaped piece of granite from an old roller the basic shape of which can still be clearly seen. The movements the sculptures make – dancing in a circle – seems to be adapted to the shape of the material.

NUCLEUS, Imagining Science
NUCLEUS, Imagining ScienceGroningen
NUCLEUS is the title of the Noorderlicht 2017 International Photography Festival. This 24th edition is about science and the representation of it by photographers and artists. The exhibitions revolve around the human urge to want to understand and control the world around us. NUCLEUS (‘the core’) is about discovery and progress.
NUCLEUS will take place from 22st October - 26th November in Groningen.
NUCLEUS Art and science
Artists often ask themselves the same questions as scientists and share many of the same principles: originality, creativity and an open mind. In NUCLEUS the two disciplines will enter into a dialogue with one another: science is a subject in the festival as well as a source of inspiration.
The human urge to understand and control the world has already led to an unprecedented amount of knowledge given the relatively short time we have been roaming this planet. The achievements of scientific thought have permeated everyone’s lives. This process, which is now already being called the ‘fourth industrial revolution’, will only intensify in the coming years.
Jos Jansen and Ben Feringa
A striking part of NUCLEUS is the collaboration between the photographer Jos Jansen and Prof. Dr. Ben Feringa, Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Groningen. He is considered to be one of the world’s most creative chemists. In collaboration with the University of Groningen, Noorderlicht has invited Jansen to capture the essence of Ben Feringa’s work, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2016.
Photographers The first photographers for the festival have been selected. Michael Najjar is a German photographer, adventurer and future astronaut. His impressive ongoing project ‘outer space’ deals with the latest developments in the exploration of the universe and the impact this will have on our future. Najjar is one of Virgin Galactic’s Pioneer Astronauts and is planning to become the first artist in space.
The Irish photographer David Thomas Smith based his series ‘Arecibo’ on the same-named radio message that was sent into space from Puerto Rico in 1974. Smith compiled the nine photographs from this series out of thousands of images from Google Maps, reflecting with the work on the origin and evolution of humanity.
