Molen De Ster
Right in the centre of Winsum is the mill hill and on this hill an octagonal stage mill for husking and grinding was erected in 1851 on behalf of P.G. Wildeveld.
The mill has a pair of grinding stones and two incomplete husking stones. In the past, the mill also housed a pair of mustard stones; one of these has been set into the wall of the car park at the foot of the mill.
De Ster was built in 1851 as the successor to a standerdmolen, which dated back to before 1628. The mill was fitted with streamlined sails in 1933, but in 1938 things went wrong during the sail-changing process: the latticework on one of the sails broke. The mill also sustained damage during the German advance in 1940. Despite the damage sustained, the mill was used to generate electricity during the war and possibly afterwards.
