Location
The church is one of the few Cuypers churches in the northern Netherlands that is still in almost its authentic condition. Only the organ is missing. That was lost after the spire fell into the church in a very heavy November storm in 1972. Inside the Catholic church, you will find an impressive high altar, beautiful wall paintings and colourful stained-glass windows.
St Willibrordus Church is located on the walking route 'In the footsteps of Aletta Jacobs'. Aletta Jacobs was 18 when this church was built. Sappemeer then has a synagogue, a Catholic, a Baptist and a Reformed church within walking distance of each other. Because there is a lot of employment around Sappemeer, new inhabitants come from all sides, and the boatmen who call at Sappemeer have also seen a lot of the world. Thus Sappemeer becomes a place for tolerance and freethinkers where all faiths can co-exist.
