Hervormde Kerk Saaksum
At the centre of the village mound you will find Saaksum's reformed church. The current church was built in 1849 with a church tower from the 16th century. The tower is a remnant of the earlier church.

In 1849, the Reformed church, which dated from the sixteenth century, was demolished due to its dilapidated condition. Fortunately, the old church tower remained standing. During the farewell speech for the old church, it was claimed that the church had been built on the site of a former brewery. Whether this is true or merely a figment of the imagination remains to be seen. In the ground floor of the tower, you will find a commemorative stone stating that the oldest part of the tower was built in 1550. Despite subsequent restorations, the tower has retained its sixteenth-century character. The old rectangular church was in such a poor state of repair that it had to be completely rebuilt in 1845. The nieuwe kerk was given a more rounded shape with large windows. Inside, you’ll find a Saaksum organ with a beautiful sound. On the north side of the exterior, you’ll find the coat of arms of Groningen.
