Aletta Henriëtte Jacobs was born on 9 February 1854 here on the Borgercompagniesterdiep, a side canal of the Winschoterdiep. Her mother was Anna de Jongh and her father Abraham Jacobs, a progressive general practitioner in Sappemeer. Aletta Jacobs was the eighth of 11 children in the Jewish family.
It was a busy time on the water here in those days. The Winschoterdiep was the main canal in Sappemeer during the excavation of the peat. Sappemeer was a good environment for an ambitious girl, as East Groningen people were very emancipated compared to the rest of the Netherlands due to their pioneering mentality and global shipping. The Jewish Jacobs family was also progressive, so the 11 sons and daughters were raised equally.
This place is on the walking route 'In the footsteps of Aletta Jacobs'. The original house is no longer there.
