Standbeeld Aletta Jacobs
Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929) became known as the first woman admitted to university. She fought for women's suffrage and world peace for the rest of her life.

Jacobs, who was born in Sappemeer, started studying medicine at the University of Groningen in 1871. In 1879, she obtained her doctorate and started a practice as a doctor. She did so in Amsterdam, where she did important work on women's health care and birth control. The statue was made by sculptor Theresia van der Pant and was placed on the forecourt of the Faculty of Letters in 1988.
