Monument Jipsinghuizen
Take a closer look
The monument at the Ruiten-Aa in Jipsinghuizen is dedicated to the work relief in Westerwolde. From 1924, unemployed people were brought to Jipsinghuizen by tram to clear heathland around the village. They had to spend the night in barracks and were paid very low wages. Artist Eddy Roos created the monument in 1989 to commemorate the labour camps. It is a floating figure with a flying figure above him, carrying a sun disk. In this monument, the flying figure is a metaphor for consolation. The sun disc symbolises the setting sun.
