Take a closer look

The Kraster family has been walking the mudflats for three generations. Jan Kraster has over 40 years’ experience as a mudflat walker. At the age of eighteen, he obtained his guide’s certificate, inspired by his father Chris, who began his career as a mudflat walking guide in 1967. Anke, Jan’s daughter, often joined him on his walks as a teenager. In 2012, she took over her grandfather’s mudflat walking stick and now leads many tours each year alongside her father.

The Wadden Sea region is stunning, yet it can be a rugged and fierce place. You might go on walks in bright sunshine with just a gentle breeze, but there are also walks in the rain, with strong winds and high tides. This unpredictability is what makes mudflat walking such a fantastic sport! Jan and Anke can’t wait to take you on one of their crossings or rambling trips!

From April to October, a range of tours are offered with various starting points along the Wadden Sea coast, including Paesens-Moddergat, Lauwersoog and Noordpolderzijl, where the characteristic Zielhoes serves as our base. If you walk to Schiermonnikoog, Ameland or Rottumeroog, the return journey is by ferry or a hired boat. Hiking tours are available at various locations across the mudflats or on Engelmansplaat/Het Rif, possibly combined with a boat trip. Check the website for the annual schedule.

Walks often take place at the weekend, but in consultation with the guide, they can also be arranged during the week. Group sizes range from a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 24 people. Larger groups can also be accommodated by arrangement, and even school classes are welcome. You can also book a smaller group; you may then be able to join an already booked tour. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss the options! We’d love to take you out onto the mudflats!
