The Nieuwe Kerk was built between 1660 and 1664 on the site of an existing churchyard, as part of the city’s expansion to the north of Groningen. The Renaissance-style church stands in an open location and is shaped like a Greek cross. It was modelled on the Noorderkerk in Amsterdam. The Nieuwe Kerk was built for Protestant worship.

Due to its long history as a cemetery, the Nieuwe Kerkhof lies slightly higher than the surrounding area. The existing cemetery was originally completely walled and had four gates, dating from around 1620. The church has the status of a national monument. The interior still features various original elements, including the pulpit.

The great value of the Nieuwe Kerkhof as a green space is enhanced by the ninety-year-old maple trees lining the access paths and the majestic beech trees standing on the lawn. Old trees are vital pillars of the ecosystem, particularly when it comes to native species such as the maple and the beech. In addition, there is a unique biotope around the current wall, home to dozens of species of mosses and lichens.
