National Park Lauwersmeer
When the Lauwerszee was closed off from the Waddenzee in 1969, the Lauwersmeer was created. At the time, nobody could have predicted that the Lauwersmeer area would become one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. This combination of vistas of the horizon, magnificent flora and fauna and so much space for recreation cannot be found anywhere else.

Dark Sky Park
Since October 2016, National Park Lauwersmeer has held the Dark Sky Park designation: an area where it is dark, where darkness is preserved and where visitors are welcome to experience that darkness at night. Far away from artificial light sources, it is so dark here at night that you can actually see everything.
