Station Hoogezand-Sappemeer
It was from this station that Aletta Jacobs travelled every day to the university in Groningen whilst she was a student.

In 1868, when Aletta Jacobs was fourteen years old, a railway station was built in Hoogezand for the Groningen–Nieuweschans line. The station building consisted of a hall with two side wings. The stationmaster lived above the station. There was also a loading and unloading area for potatoes, cardboard, coal and fertiliser. From 1878 onwards, it was possible to travel to Germany from Hoogezand station. Unfortunately, the old station building has been demolished.
Aletta Jacobs travelled by train every day from Hoogezand to Groningen to attend university. She soon became a familiar face to the train drivers; if she was ever running a little late, they would wait a moment before setting off. She would go on to undertake many more train journeys later in life. In 1911 and 1912, she travelled all over the world by boat and train in her campaign for women’s suffrage.
