Sluiswachterswoning

Originally, Kielsterdiep (a side canal of Winschoterdiep) was the main transport route to and from Kiel-Windeweer.

Built in 1885, the sluiswachterswoning is special mainly because of its cornice. This is a moulding along the façade that creates a special shadow play due to its design, in addition to a decorated eaves. From the house, lock fees were charged to passing boatmen. The amounts can still be read in the notice box on the front facade of the house: 1.5 cents per ship's ton for empty ships 3 cents per ship's ton for loaded ships 3 cents per tree, yoke, beam, plank or post.
