Near Schildwolde and Overschild, in the Duurswold region, lies the Schildmeer. The Schildmeer is also the starting point of canal De Groeve. A large part of the area can be overlooked from the watchtower on the north side of the Schildmeer. The Schildmeer is almost completely surrounded by nature reserve. This makes it an excellent place for a nice bike ride: the Schildmeer round trip. There are cycle paths around the entire lake. A wooden bicycle bridge (Schildjer Tibat) was also built in 2009 over the Duurwold drainage canal, which runs through the lake.
