Wierdedorp Warffum
The historic centre of the village of Warffum is situated on a wierde covering an area of around 12 hectares. This makes it the largest wierde in the Netherlands.
The wierde is entirely built up. This has proved to be the wierde’s salvation, as the buildings spared the raised mound during the large-scale excavation of the wierdes in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the centre of the old mound in the village of Warffum in the Hoogeland lies Openluchtmuseum Het Hoogeland. The museum shows how the people of Groningen lived and worked between 1775 and 1920.
