De Faun

A multi-tenant business building was built on the corner of Herestraat and Gedempte Zuiderdiep in 1935.

Take a closer look

The building was designed by architect A.R. Wittop Koning (in collaboration with A.Th. van Elmpt), commissioned by life insurance company De Utrecht. The building was soon named De Faun, because of the mythological figures you see in various places in the design. The figures were created by Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. The building's style is in keeping with that of the Delft School. Features of this are the historicising shapes, the rough dark red brick and the window shapes that refer to the Gothic style (narrow monastery windows, bulbous windows and cross windows).
