Hervormde Kerk Schildwolde

The Church of Schildwolde dates from the seventeenth century. The present church was built on the foundations of an older church from the thirteenth century and was built after the Reformation.

It is a simple hall church, built of brick. A layer of plaster was applied over the bricks. The church was consecrated in 1686. The Juffertoren (missile tower), standing apart from the church, is a remnant of that original church. Juffertoren is the name given to three church towers in Groningen. Besides this one in Schildwolde, another one can be found in Onstwedde (part of Nicolaaskerk). The third stood in Holwierde (near the Stefanuskerk) until it collapsed in 1836 and was demolished in 1855. The towers are distinguished within Groningen by their brick spires. The name refers to a juffer; a slender, pointed-topped spruce; the same shape as the tower spires have.
