Lauwersmeer Lake

Instead of venturing out onto the rough waters of the Wadden Sea from the village of Lauwersoog, you might opt for a cruise on the fresh water of the Lauwersmeer Lake. These waters open up to a wonderful scenic area. The Lauwersmeer Lake features various marinas, where you can moor for a short stop. If you plan on staying a bit longer, use one of the recreational landings as your home base.

Reitdiep

The Reitdiep canal meanders through the Groningen countryside between the Lauwersmeer Lake and the city of Groningen. The Reitdiep is one of the oldest man-made landscapes in Europe and once formed the connection between Groningen and the open sea. From your gently bobbing boat, take in the old river beds, such as around the Oude Diepje near Winsum. Many areas around the Reitdiep have found another purpose as a scenic area.

Marenland

Marenland Recreatie is located at a lovely spot where you can spend time by the water near the friendly village of Winsum. Hire a canoe or other boat to explore the lovely environs; you’ll immediately see why the village has once been proclaimed the most beautiful village in the Netherlands. You should know that from Winsum you can sail much further into the Groningen countryside if you wish. Naturally, there are other great ways to spend time by the water. Plop down at the De Jongens Uit De Buurt outdoor café, or spend the night in a hiker’s hut by the water.
