Until 1960, Zoutkamp had a large fishing port, but when the Lauwerszee was closed off, the village lost this important position. The village still has the look and feel of an old-fashioned fishing village, thanks to its monumental locks and still-used old inner harbour. It is therefore an excellent place for an afternoon of sailing and fishing.

Between Lauwersmeer and the city of Groningen, the Reitdiep meanders through the Groningen landscape. The Reitdiep connected Groningen to the open sea. It is one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Europe. As you float on the water in your boat, you can still see the old riverbeds in many places along the waterfront, for example around the Oude Diepje near Winsum. Today, many of the areas around the Reitdiep are also set up as nature reserves.
Marenland
Near cosy Winsum, you will find Marenland Recreatie. A lovely place to enjoy yourself along the water. At Marenland, hire a canoe or take another boat to discover Winsum from the water. You'll discover why the village was once voted the most beautiful village in the Netherlands. Optionally, you can sail much further into the Groningen landscape. You can also enjoy yourself around the water here in other ways. Take a seat on the terrace at De Jongens uit de buurt or spend the night in one of the hiker's huts by the water.
