Boating and fishing in Waddenland

Wadden Sea
The Wadden Sea is a unique part of Groningen’s natural landscape. The sea was formed during the last ice age and is home to many remarkable species. Various species of birds live there, and the waters are home to seals and many species of fish, amongst others. When you take your boat out onto the rough sea, you might even spot a seal coming to say hello. A trip across the Wadden Sea is always a special experience.

Lauwersmeer
As well as being able to head out onto the rough waters of the Wadden Sea from Lauwersoog, you can also sail on the fresh waters of Lauwersmeer. From the waters of Lauwersmeer, you can explore this special nature reserve. There are several marinas on Lauwersmeer. Use the recreational jetties as a base for several day trips or moor here briefly for a stopover on shore.

Zoutkamp
Until 1960, Zoutkamp had a major fishing harbour, but when the Lauwerszee was closed off, the village lost this important status. The village still retains the charm of an old-fashioned fishing village, thanks to its historic locks and the old inner harbour, which is still in frequent use. It is therefore an excellent spot for an afternoon of boating and fishing.

Reitdiep
Between Lauwersmeer and the city of Groningen, the Reitdiep meanders through the Groningen countryside. The Reitdiep once connected Groningen to the open sea. It is one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Europe. As you drift along in your boat, you can still see the old riverbeds in many places along the water’s edge, for example around the Oude Diepje near Winsum. Many of the areas surrounding the Reitdiep are now also designated as nature reserves.

Take to the Wadden Sea
Stap on board, go fishing and learn all about the Wadden Sea inhabitants. With the fishing cutter ZK9, Eppo and Jan make sailing and fishing trips the Wadden Sea. While Eppo is at the helm, Jan fishes everything out of the Wadden Sea with a large net. Crabs, shrimps, shellfish and fish of all shapes and sizes. "We sail, fish and let people see and smell all kinds of things," he says. The catch goes back overboard, but the stories take you back to the mainland.

Marenland
Near the charming village of Winsum, you’ll find Marenland Recreatie. A lovely spot to enjoy the waterside. At Marenland, you can hire a canoe or another small boat to explore Winsum from the water. You’ll discover why the village was once named the most beautiful village in the Netherlands. If you like, you can paddle much further into the Groningen countryside. There are plenty of other ways to enjoy the waterside here too. Take a seat on the terrace at De Jongens uit de buurt or spend the night in one of the hikers’ huts by the water.
