Out and about by bicycle
Nice exercise with the wind in your hair, that's great on a bike! Along the way, you will see young life in the awakening nature, mills and historical farms and encounter the tastiest local products. In this section you can read more about the best cycling routes in spring.
Taste the white gold
Spring means time for the seasonal vegetable par excellence: asparagus! This delicacy grows abundantly in Midden-Groningen, so you get your asparagus crisp-fresh from the farmer himself. Along the bicycle route 'Taste the white gold' (43.3 km), you will also find three asparagus farmers and local shops where you can buy fresh eggs, the best potatoes and honest meat. So you can cycle your own meal together. Several restaurants serve freshly harvested asparagus from the region. At Hotel Restaurant Faber, for instance, lovers can enjoy the white gold from the second week of April. Want to see for yourself how asparagus is grown and harvested? Then join the asparagus excursion 'Taste the white gold' on Ascension Day, 14 May 2026 (advance ticket purchase is required).

Discover the Midden-Groningen countryside with plenty of nature, landscape, historic farms and local food. The cycle route 'De boer op! in Midden-Groningen' takes you past imposing farms, where the Oldambster type predominates. Some have beautiful winding gardens, others are right next to the road. Note the many windows in the front house: the more windows, the wealthier the owner was at the time. Along the way, you will pass local shops, nurseries and roadside stalls selling (h)honest, local produce. For plant lovers, Tuinoed Foltz is definitely worth a visit. The northern route (34.3 km) passes through Noordbroek, the Woldstreek and Sappemeer. With the southern route (50.6 km), you just dive into the peat-colonial area of Borger- and Tripscompagnie, Kiel-Windeweer, Meeden and Muntendam. In Zuidbroek, both routes intersect, allowing you to make your cycling trip much longer if you wish.
Read moreOde to the mill
They are the workhorses of polders and fields: windmills. It is impossible to imagine the Dutch landscape without them and they provide dry feet and flour for baking, among other things. In Midden-Groningen , the cycle route 'Ode aan de molen' (47 km) connects eight polder and corn mills. The three polder mills on the Groenedijk in Slochteren and the Noordermolen in Noordbroek drained excess water into canals and rivers, making the land more passable. Corn mills such as the Entreprise in Kolham and Stel's Meul'n in Harkstede ground the grain, which produced flour for bread and pancakes, for example. At mill Windlust in Overschild de molenaar still grinds grain into animal feed as of old, and the other mills also turn regularly. Want to see a mill from the inside? That is often possible on Saturdays and during the National Mills Days in May or the Groninger Mill Weekend in June.

Would you like to go for a bike ride with your children? Then we recommend the 'Borg, mill and critters round' (10.5 km). The route passes the Fraeylemaborg, mills and De Baggerputten. In the borg you can do a scavenger hunt to find out all about the former residents and in the large park behind the borg there are regular activities. Nature reserve De Baggerputten has many species of plants, trees, insects and birds, including as many as twenty butterfly species and twenty-five dragonfly species.
