The Changing Same
Take a closer look
In the middle of the pond in front of the Duisenberg Building on the Zernike complex is the contour line of a huge human figure. The sculpture is six metres high and made of stainless steel. Within the sculpture's outline, a powerful fountain sprays water upwards, making parts of the figure barely visible. The jet of water reaches the top of the shoulder before disintegrating into a dense mist. The sculpture's title refers to 'something that changes and yet remains the same'. The changing same depicts research within the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. According to artists Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart, the water of the fountain is the backbone of the human figure and is a metaphor for man's ability to constantly change himself and his environment without losing himself.
