Wuivend riet

These four reeds were designed by René de Boer. As a starting point, he used an existing well at the site of his design: the ENT clinic of the Academic Hospital Groningen.

He transformed the well into a square pond with movable reeds on each side. The four reeds are made of welded brass. The outside of the stems is smooth and round, while the inside has irregular, organic shapes. The erratic transition from the round, sleek outside to the organic inside suggests a tearing of the stalks. The culms balance with two points on corten steel 'holders' and are moved by the wind. In 1987, the ENT clinic was demolished, after which the sculpture was stored for a long time. It has since been given a beautiful spot on Oostersingel, on the grounds of the UMCG
