Molen Fortuna

Molen Fortuna in Noordhorn is an old corn-peel mill. A monument in the Groningen landscape.

Long before the current mill on Schippersstraat in Noordhorn was built, another mill stood here. When exactly it was built is not known, but even before 1774 there was talk of a mill on this spot. In 1898, this mill was bought by the couple Klaas Homan and Grietje de Boer. In 1890, they watched their nightmare come true: the mill burned down completely. Against all advice to build an electric pumping station to be more competitive, Homan decided to rebuild the mill. That same year, the current mill stood there. The Molen Fortuna is a so-called corn-peel mill. This means that the mill can grind grain, but is also capable of husking barley and/or rice. For this purpose, it has two pairs of grinding stones and two peeling stones.

Today, Molen Fortuna is mainly used for other purposes. For instance, the mill is used for various events such as weddings and there are regular activities in and around the mill. There is also a permanent exhibition on the Battle of Noordhorn, where you can read all about the historical background of the battle and the mill's role in it. The mill is also the starting point of a cycle route along the entrenchments and mills in the Westerkwartier. All in all, there is plenty to experience at Molen Fortuna.

The mill is open from April to October.
