Voormalig gemeentehuis Nieuwe Pekela

Construction of a new town hall in Nieuwe Pekela began in 1938. The design, a typical example of Interbellum architecture, was made by municipal architect J. Tuinhof.

Take a closer look

The building was inaugurated on 22 August 1940. Because of World War II, it was done without an official or festive opening. A striking feature of the building is its 26-metre-high tower. This was built to preserve the village image. In fact, a municipal tower had previously stood on the site where the town hall was built. The building was used as a town hall until 1989. Today, it is a location where young people live in assisted living. As such, it is not freely accessible.
