Route 40: The dal van de Ruiten Aa Jipsinghuizen
On this route, you walk through the dal van de Ruiten Aa near Weende, along the vast fields in the Jipsinghuizer- and Weenderveld and get to know the Winschoterbos. This route is 13.5 kilometres long.
Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted on this route.
This route is an initiative of Toeristisch Rustpunt MoeNieks and takes you, among other things, along the meandered river Ruiten Aa. Since 1992, this area has been gradually redeveloped over a period of 30 years. The area has been restored as much as possible to how it looked around 1900. By making the stream meander again, nature is enhanced and fish can get to and from their spawning grounds. At the same time, footpaths and cycle paths have been constructed and the water can be crossed at several places via bridges or at fordable spots. At 500 ha, Renneborg-Ter Walslage was the largest and the last project of the total development of the area around the Ruiten Aa (2,500 ha). You walk through the Renneborg area from point 23.

From point 11, you walk along the vast fields in the Jipsinghuizer- and Weenderveld. In 1920, large parts of Westerwolde were still covered with heath and peat. It was a time of rising unemployment in our country. In that year, the municipality of Vlagtwedde decided to purchase land in order to start labour supply projects. The municipalities of Bellingwolde, Winschoten and Wedde followed suit. From 1929, the various municipalities operated jointly under the banner of N.V. "De Verenigde Groninger Gemeenten". The first to be reclaimed were the Weenderveld and the Jipsinghuizerveld (1924-1931). The once vast and desolate fields and moors thus changed in a short time into fields on which mainly potatoes were grown. Only in a few places did the original heath landscape remain intact, such as at Ter Borg.
You will also become acquainted with the Winschoterbos (point 17). J. Buiskool, state inspector for work relief, had urged the municipality of Winschoten to cede 50 ha of heathland on the Jipsingboertange road to N.V. "De Vereenigde Groninger Gemeenten". In return, the municipality of Winschoten had to settle for the plot that is now the Winschoterbos. This plot had to be wooded to compensate for the forest that had disappeared during the reclamation. On the south side of the forest, there are still old white alders, reminding of the first planting. The plot was later transferred to Natuurmonumenten. (Source: Landscape biography of Westerwolde).
