Nature and environment
Schouwerzijl is beautifully situated on the Reitdiep and the Kromme Raken, between Groot Maarslag, Schaphalsterzijl and Schouwen. With over 90 inhabitants a small, friendly village on the Hogeland of Groningen. With a harbour, a sluice gate, a village vegetable garden and orchard, a jetty for passers-by, a playground and a swimming raft. But especially with lots of peace, space and views. You are in the middle of an ideal cycling, sailing and walking area. The Pieterpad practically runs past here. Be surprised by old Groninger villages and their ancient churches built on wierden. Nearby are Winsum, the Tea Factory of Houwerzijl and the fishing village of Zoutkamp. The Verhildersum deposit in Leens is also worth a visit. The Lauwersmeer National Park is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers. And a day trip to Schiermonnikoog, a trip with the Reitdiep ferry, a mudflat hike from Pieterburen or a visit to the bustling city of Groningen are highly recommended.
