Imaka Lezing: Human Presents: Footprints in the Arctic

People have been coming to the Arctic for centuries, leaving all kinds of traces. Over time, these traces have changed in types, quantities and impact.

In this lecture I will dive deeper into 2 of these human presents: plastic on Arctic beaches and underwater noise.
A lecture by Eelco Leemans. Eelco Leemans is an independent expert on sustainable use of the oceans. Among his previous positions are President of the Clean Shipping Coalition and Executive Director of the North Sea Foundation. Mr Leemans is a former Mariner, with senior positions on a range of ships worldwide, in particular sailing vessels. With a background in Environmental Science, he is now active in several marine programs, ranging from research projects on Arctic Marine Litter and Underwater Noise to international policy on ship emissions and multi-use in offshore wind farms. Since 20 years he has been working on international maritime policy, in particular at UN level.

About IMAKA
IMAKA is the Arctic Centre's volunteer outreach organisation. We have invited polar scientists, artists or other experts to guest-lecture to a general audience about once every month for about 20 years. IMAKA means 'maybe' in Greenlandic and is a central word in their vocabulary and philosophy, as “one never knows for sure” in the Arctic. What we do know for sure, though, is that IMAKA has been forced to switch to digital and, rebranded as e-MAKA, we embrace this opportunity to invite guest lecturers from farther afield. Most of our lectures are in Dutch, but some in English.
