You get on. You marvel. You get off. The bus journey is at least as beautiful as the destination. Now take line 163. From the city to the Wadden Sea. Departing from Hoofdstation Groningen and arriving in Lauwersoog. The place to eat fish, spot seals and get a breath of fresh air.
The WEC
Injured, sick or rejected seals used to be taken care of in Pieterburen. The seal centre has since moved to the newWorld Heritage Centre. Here, they are cared for, can be seen by the general public and are prepared to be placed back in the wild. But there is much more to see and do. Experience a fish's journey through the Wadden Sea and find out what it encounters. Do your own research, carry out experiments and learn all about the Wadden Sea. The WEC is truly an interactive experience for young and old. If you get off the bus at the Visafslag stop in Lauwersoog, you can reach the WEC in a few minutes on foot
Taste the Wad
In Lauwersoog, the mudflats and the sea are close by. So is everything that lives and grows here. Fish, all kinds of greens, shellfish and crustaceans. You will find the tastiest local products in various restaurants. At 't Ailand they keep it close to home. Both Sterkenburg and Schierzicht are the right place for freshly fried fish. Or of course for an ice cream in warm weather. You can also make it one big feast at Waddengenot aan Zee. A plate to share with almost all the goodies from the sea you can think of
Set sail
More takes place on the Wadden than you might think. What looks like a vast plain at first sight turns into an adventurous landscape at low tide. Wadlopen is a unique experience: with your feet through the mud, the wind in your face and the vastness around you. From Lauwersoog, you can walk across the mud flats to Schiermonnikoog or the Engelmansplaat. Prefer high and dry? Then take a boat trip from the port in Lauwersoog. Enjoy the view, the fresh air and who knows, you might even spot seals.
