Westerkwartier

Waddenland

In Waddenland, you walk on the bottom of the sea and sleep under a true Dark Sky. Here you will find the National Park Lauwersmeer and UNESCO World Heritage Site the Wadden Sea; unique areas where nature is still truly central.

Eemsdelta

Historic Appingedam with its hangende keukens. And in the backyard the Dollard and the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll find it in Eems Delta. The medieval churches on the centuries-old mounds proudly tower above the vast landscape here.

City

Oldambt

Grain production in Oldambt led to stony farmers, local communism and huge red-brick factories. The flame went out, but the fire of de Graanrepubliek continued to smoulder. Full of activity and events, this region is worth visiting.

Adventurers sought their fortune in the Veenkoloniën. Their pioneering work resulted in a special landscape with an equally special history. Many monumental houses in villages that lie like ribbons along the canals recall this past.
