Adventurers sought their fortune in the vast peatlands of the Veenkoloniën. Their pioneering work has resulted in a remarkable landscape with an equally remarkable history. Villages sprang up in ribbon-like formations along the canals used for peat transport. Sawmills, shipyards and factories brought prosperity in the 19th century. The many listed houses stand as a testament to this.
