Veenkoloniën
Adventurers sought their fortune in the vast peat landscape of the Veenkoloniën. Their pioneering work resulted in a special landscape with an equally special history. Villages sprang up as ribbons along the canals used for peat shipping. Sawmills, shipyards and factories brought prosperity in the 19th century, as evidenced by the many monumental houses.
