Borgerswold recreation park

Woldlaan 10, Veendam – In 1971, a 450-hectare area originated from a sandpit in the moorlands west of Veendam-Wildervank. It was named the Borgerswold recreation park and borders on the town of Veendam. Its white drawbridges provide a charming and special atmosphere. Recreational facilities include cable skiing, riding schools, a golf course, a petting zoo and bathing sites. Beautiful bridle paths and an extensive network of bicycle routes and trails traverse the park. In short, Borgerswold is perfect for an active day out or a day just chilling in a quiet place.

Hellingwal 3, Muntendam – A polder in the Veenkoloniën peat district: now this may sound somewhat peculiar – even so, there is one in the Veendan built-up area, between the Westerdiep and Oosterdiep canal. The Oude Ae rivers meanders through this small and ancient stream landscape. Once you are here, be sure to stop over in Muntendam for a walk through the centre and take in its historic buildings.

Tussen de Venen botanical garden & nature park

Nieuweweg 127, Muntendam – Bridges, historic trees, viewpoints and a ruin make for an educational and exciting venue. Many people consider the Heemtuin and its neighbouring Natuurpark the ‘pearl of Muntendam’, and not without reason. The original Heemtuin dates from 1982 and was once a sheep meadow fringed with trees. It was transformed into a 3.5-hectare natural wooded area where nature was left to reign. A few years ago, the area was extended with an orchard featuring old fruit tree varieties and an apiary. You will also find vegetable gardens, educational gardens, exploratory gardens and a catering facility here.

Ericalaan 48, Oude Pekela – Hike this surprising 50-hectare recreational woodland south of the village of Pekela and take in the numerous butterfly, summer bird and insect species found here. In addition to footpaths, various bicycle paths traverse this scenic area with coniferous trees. You will find a sandy beach to the north for a refreshing dip or some windsurfing.

Veenjagerspad

Woldlaan 10, Veendam – Go with friends to the Veenjagerspad in Borgerswold park for an active adventure with the Borgerswolf, filled with climbing and playground equipment. Climb the Veenjagerstoren tower and cross the river on the Jagersschip. Once you have conquered each and every obstacle, a lovely keepsake will be waiting for you.
