The Groningen Peat Colonies form part of the well-developed cycle junction network. As a result, they are easily accessible from all directions via the most scenic cycle routes. In addition, there are various walking and cycling routes, ranging from city walks to long day trips.

Peat extraction and trade attracted workers from all corners of the world and with many faiths. This explains the multitude of religious heritage in the Veenkoloniën. Cycle the 'ZoveelKerkenroute' along 20 different churches. The basic route of about 35 km goes through Veendam and Pekela. The route can be further expanded with a round of Sappemeer and Menterwolde of about 35 km.

For those looking for a challenging cycle ride, there is a 23-kilometre mountain bike route in Borgerswold Leisure Park in Veendam, featuring plenty of bends, long straight stretches, changes in elevation and a few spectacular descents. The route can be shortened to 13 kilometres.

Rest stops are self-catering locations along cycling and walking routes where you can take a breather. For a voluntary contribution, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea here, and perhaps a treat too. You’ll also find everything else you need for your cycle ride; you can even patch a puncture there.
