Between Stadskanaal and Veendam, on the border of Groningen and Drenthe, you will find the longest museum railway in the Netherlands. Stap on, take a trip back in time and discover what train travel used to be like. In the museum, you will learn all about the history of the railway.

Trains have been running on the railway around Stadskanaal since 1905, when the first people could catch the train from Gieten to the town. For years, Stadskanaal was an important hub in the transport of people and goods. Over the years, as the road network expanded, there was less and less demand for train transport. Finally, in 1990, the last train ran over the railway. To preserve the railway as an industrial monument, the STAR was founded in 1992.

Since 1994, museum trains have been running through the Groningen countryside again. Stap in, sniff the smell of steam and enjoy the journey between Stadskanaal and Veendam. Here you can experience what it was like to travel on a steam train. In the museum in Stadskanaal, you will learn all about the history of the railway. You will discover which stations were all along the line and what it all looked like in the old days. Would you like to sit in the driver's seat? You can do so in the carriage shed. You can make your visit complete by spending the night in an old STARwagon.
