Finish: Paviljoen Flonk, Oldambtmeer, Finsterwolde
Length of route: approx. 65 km
Groningen's Oldambt region is better known to many as: de Graanrepubliek. For many, this area is a remote corner, far away in the north, but for those who love it: the enormous vastness of the view, over the endless seeming grain fields and rapeseed fields impresses always and everyone. Driving through the region, you discover how the area was created. How the land was conquered by the waters of the Dollard. With your own eyes, you will get an impression of the golden years of the grain farmers, with their palaces like farms, with the rented houses and their lush gardens. The grain of Groningen, or the gold of Groningen, brought about a lot of positive things. But remember, this splendour also had a grim downside at the same time, namely the bitter poverty among the workers. All these aspects and other trivia are covered during the route through the Oldambt, through the Grain Repubic.
Extra to book:
Reception by the hostess of Huninga's Heem, Diet Faber. While enjoying coffee/tea and delicious freshly baked apple pie, Diet will tell you about the origin, rise and fall of the Grain Republic, about the creation of the Oldambtmeer (formerly Lake Huninga), about the unique character of the Oldamster polders, and much more. This as a warm-up before you start the route.
