OLDAMBTMEER LAKE

Sailing across former farmlands

The Oldambtmeer Lake is located in the Oldambt (east Groningen). Measuring 800 hectares and 14 million cubic metres of water, it’s one of the larger lakes in the Netherlands. It may be hard to imagine, but prior to 2005 – when then Queen Beatrix turned open the valve – this was farmland. Where the wind once created yellow waves in the grain, today it ripples the water. Set out on foot or by bike to explore this vast scenic area.
