Floating on the water is nice, but sometimes you also need to let off steam. The Oldambtmeer has been specially constructed for water sports and offers plenty of opportunities to be active on and around the water. Cycling around the water or relaxing in the hot tub are also possibilities. Lovely, isn't it?

At Huninga's Watersport in Midwolda, you can be sporty on the Oldambtmeer. You can paddle a canoe through nature, go sailing, windsurfing and supping or hire a sloop to discover the most beautiful spots with the family. Not yet experienced? No problem! There is a wide range of sailing and windsurfing courses for adults and children.

Would you like to explore the beautiful Oldambtmeer? In the various harbours around the lake, you can easily rent a boat to experience the area from the water. Do you have your own boat? No problem! There are several boat ramps where you can easily launch. New moorings offer canoeists and water sports enthusiasts additional opportunities to explore the area from the water. The jetties are spread over various locations around the Oldambtmeer and connect to existing walking and cycling routes, allowing you to fully enjoy nature and the open landscape of Blauwestad. In addition, there is plenty of fun in the docks during the summer, with various small activities providing extra atmosphere and fun.

What's sup?

Suppen on the Oldambtmeer is a fun way to get to know the area. Once on the lake, you can make up your own different sup routes, but you can also choose to follow existing laps, such as the Oldambtmeer sup route. With this route, you cover 9.5 kilometres. You get on at Midwolda beach, where there are several parking facilities. You can rent a sup at various places around the Oldambtmeer. Esther van de Supperij also organises sup lessons, trips and adventures, perfect for exploring the beautiful natural area around the Oldambtmeer near Blauwestad. A unique way to actively enjoy the surroundings. Or try yoga on a sup. That's something different.

Windsurfing

You will also regularly find windsurfers on the lake. You can windsurf anywhere on the lake. You can get on at various places and there is even a special surf jetty at the end of Clingeweg in Meerland. The lake is also perfect for sailing.

Canoeing

Discover the Oldambtmeer in Blauwestad from the water. With vast expanses of water, quiet creeks and beautiful nature, it is the perfect place for a relaxing canoe trip. Start from one of the boarding points, such as Strand Zuid, and enjoy the silence, the flora and fauna, or a picnic on an island. Canoes can be rented nearby, and the lake offers plenty of opportunities for both short paddling trips and longer adventures. An ideal activity to explore Oldambt's nature.

Thermal baths & wellness

Enjoy the peace and quiet at Thermen Bad Nieuweschans, the first spa in the Netherlands that opened its doors in 1985 under the name Fontana. Here you will also find the Netherlands' first thermal spring. This ancient source of salty mineral-rich spring water was discovered in 1975 by a German researcher at a depth of 630 metres. In recent years, the spa has developed into a wellness & spa resort including a hotel, restaurant, sauna square and offer of various treatments.

Angling

The Oldambtmeer is ideal for anglers, with a healthy bottom, good water quality and a growing fish stock, including roach, bream and pike. In Midwolda, De Kolk offers a different experience: behind this Oldambster farm you will find fishing ponds where you can catch trout, sturgeon or carp, combined with a visit to the cosy eatery and terrace.

Pieter Smitbrug

Don't want to be in or on the water, but want to bridge the water? You can do so via the Pieter Smit Bridge. This eye-catcher forms a direct link between Winschoten and Blauwestad and is Europe's longest walking and cycling bridge. From Winschoten, you can reach the recreational facilities around the Oldambtmeer in no time.

Water ferries

Did you know that no fewer than three bicycle ferries sail in Blauwestad? They not only provide a nice break during your trip, but also give you a whole new view of the watery landscape. In Het Riet nature reserve, the Rietvoorn is once again in full swing after having been out of use for a while. Further on, in Reiderwolde, you will find two more ferries: Aart's familiar Pontje near the jachthaven Reiderhaven and Henk's new Pontje, which connects Reiderwolde with nature reserve De Tjamme near Beerta. So you cycle effortlessly from one nature reserve to another, with the wind in your hair and dry feet.
