Pieter Smit Bridge
The Pieter Smitbrug connects Blauwestad with Winschoten and, at 800 metres, is Europe's longest cycling and walking bridge.
The bridge spans water, motorway and nature, and is accessible at three points. Designed by architect Nol Molenaar and built with sustainable timber from Gabon, it is a striking piece of craftsmanship. The bridge was named after former mayor Pieter Smit and opened in 2021.
