Do you know what a Westerner thinks of Groningen's Hogeland? "Clay, cold and crunchy". Those are many people's first thoughts. But then they have never been there before, because once you set foot here, you are gripped by the strength and splendour of the area.
It is an area of small villages and towns with pretty names like Noordpolderzijl, Stitswerd, Doodstil, Kleine Huisjes, Usquert and Baflo. It has, with Niehove, the most photogenic village and, with Winsum, the most beautiful village in the Netherlands. It has the most medieval churches and that in a 360-degree landscape. You can see the sun set magisterially behind the horizon. It borders the most beautiful nature reserve in the Netherlands - the Wadden Sea. Yes, so beautiful is the Hogeland that it has been a source of inspiration for many artists since the last century. Take, for example, the artists of the famous art group De Ploeg.
