Galgenveld Paddepoelsterweg
At first glance, the field between Paddepoelsterweg and Penningsdijk looks like an ordinary grass field. Nothing could be further from the truth; the field has a special past.
Take a closer look
In the distant past, this lawn served as a gallows field. Convicts were hanged here. These fields were often located along important access roads to the city, on the border of two jurisdictions. The fields were situated in these places to deter incoming travellers. They saw on entering the city what awaited them if they committed crimes. Paddepoelsterweg was such an important access road to the city of Groningen, hence a gallows field was also located here. Until a few years back, almost nothing was known about this, but on a map from 1730-1736, the field was discovered.
