Kerk Oostum
On one of the mounds along the Reitdiep you will find the kerk Oostum. Most of this straight-lined church dates from the 13th century.
Take a closer look
Since the church was built in the 13th century, quite a few changes have been made. After a century, the narrow western section and the transverse tower were added. And the tower's gabled roof was only added in the sixteenth century. During the 1972 restoration, it was decided not to erase the building traces of the various conversions, so that the history of the church remains visible. Also special is the swinging bell that hangs in the church; it dates back to 1466 and first hung in the church of Feerwerd. This bell is richly decorated with images of the seven apostles, a crucified Christ and various biblical scenes.
Outside the church are two unusual benches. These were inspired by paintings depicting the church: Kerkje te Oostum by Johan Dijkstra and Oogst bij Oostum by Janne de Vries. Both artists were members of artists' association De Ploeg.
