David & Goliath

Near Eemshaven stands the northernmost windmill on the Dutch mainland: the Goliath. Next to this old mill is the tallest wind turbine in the Netherlands: the David.

Take a closer look

In 1897, the Goliath was built in Uithuizermeeden to begin pumping the Eemspolder. In 1979, the mill lost its function as a new pumping station took over this work. In 2003, the mill's location changed and it got a new mailing address, which while the mill was not moved. Since then, in fact, the mill has fallen under the locality of Eemshaven instead of Uithuizermeeden. Thanks to an enthusiastic (volunteer) miller, however, the mill can still be visited regularly in operation and serves as an official wedding venue. In 2017, the tallest wind turbine in the Netherlands was built next to the Goliath. It was named David by owner Lagerwey, in reference to the old Bible story. The wind turbine provides enough power for 5,000 households.
