David & Goliath
Near Eemshaven stands the northernmost windmill on the Dutch mainland: the Goliath. Next to this old windmill stands the tallest wind turbine in the Netherlands: the David.

In 1897, the Goliath was built in Uithuizermeeden to drain the Eemspolder. In 1979, the mill lost its function when a new pumping station took over this work. In 2003, the mill’s location changed and it was given a new postal address, even though the mill itself had not been moved. Since then, the mill has fallen under the jurisdiction of Eemshaven rather than Uithuizermeeden. Thanks to an enthusiastic (volunteer) miller, the mill can still be seen in operation on a regular basis and serves as an official wedding venue. In 2017, the tallest wind turbine in the Netherlands was built next to the Goliath. Its owner, Lagerwey, named it David, in reference to the ancient biblical story. The wind turbine generates enough electricity to power 5,000 households.
