In 1990, the city of Groningen celebrated its 950th anniversary. To honour this, a contemporary city gate was placed along each of the city's main access roads.

Architect Daniel Libeskind designed these city gates. Along the Noorddijkerweg stands a 400-metre-long row of willow trees. It is striking that they are planted on one side of a canal and that they are all bent. The latter is due to pillars in the canal fitted with metal wires that bend the trees as they grow. This city gate was designed by choreographer William Forsythe. Through the trees, he aims to depict dancing bodies that are shaped and distorted.
