The oldest surviving polder mill in the province of Groningen is in Slochteren. It is an eight-sided ground-sailer. The mill takes its name from the area it drained, the Groote polder (460 ha).

The oldest surviving polder mill in the province of Groningen is located in Slochteren. It is an eight-sided ground-sailer. The mill takes its name from the area it drained, the Groote polder (460 ha). When it was built, the mill was equipped with a scoop wheel to pump away the water. This was later replaced by an auger, and in 1915 a locomotive, with separate auger, came to supplement wind pumping. Later, a Brons crude oil engine of 36 hp replaced the locomobile. On the ground floor are double field crosses, placed separately at the front and rear, presumably a later reinforcement. Land consolidation in the mid-20th century made the mill obsolete as a grinding tool.
