From three different directions, old church paths lead up to the wierde, which offers a breathtaking view in all directions. The church, as it appears to us, is a fairly well-preserved Romanesque-Gothic church dating from the early 13th century.
The church was built around 1250. The tower dates from the 14th century. The relatively low tower is unarticulated. The tower’s pyramid-shaped roof dates from 1868: until 1848, the tower had a gable roof. A double dome was subsequently added, as can still be seen today at the Mariakerk in Uithuizermeeden. However, the structure was not properly finished, causing the rain to rot the timber framework, and so, just 20 years after its construction, it was decided to install the current spire.
