Grote waterpoort
Delfzijl has always been vulnerable to flooding. Even now, the cutoffs in the dyke have to be closed occasionally to keep the water away from the town.

Originally a settlement gate, the Waterpoort was rebuilt in 1833. At the top of the gate you can see a crown with a W. This commemorates King William I, who ruled at the time. On the harbour side of the gate is a mark indicating the water level during the storm surge on 16 February 1962. However, the highest water level to date was measured in 2006: 4.83 metres above sea level.
